My core training is in Transactional Analysis (TA), a theory of personality which helps us understand what goes on inside ourselves and how we engage (“transact”) with others. I also draw on other approaches, and my ongoing personal and professional development.
Transactional Analysis originated in the work of Dr Eric Berne, a Canadian psychiatrist working in the United States in the 1950s and 60s. It has developed significantly since, whilst remaining grounded in the principles of mutual respect, recognising the worth and value in everyone, believing in everyone’s capacity to change, and our inbuilt drive for health.
TA and other humanistic therapies help us to remove blocks to our natural vitality and sense of wellbeing, and to recover our inherent capacity for spontaneity, intimacy, and growth.
A Collaborative Approach
Therapy is not something which I do to you. You are the expert in your life, and an active participant in the work. My training and experience equip me to work in a wide range of ways, depending on you and what you want to achieve. We collaborate, combining your expertise with my skills, training and life experience to meet your objectives, keeping these under review and talking openly about the work.
Counselling and Psychotherapy are known as “talking therapies”, and we will have conversations focussing on you and your wellbeing. These conversations can involve reflecting on your life, past and present, on what happens in your “internal landscape”, and in your relationships, including what goes on between us. We pay attention to the themes we notice. This may include becoming aware of the automatic reactions which helped you to cope in the past but no longer serve you well, and helping you to respond differently in the present.
Your history may give us useful information, however often events and relationships which prevent us from thriving are not accessible to our conscious minds, and it is not necessary to know the details. The patterns created by our history are held in our bodily experience and continue in our current ways of being, including what goes on inside us, and how we relate to others. These themes arise in the therapy where they can be explored, attended to, and transformed in the present, enabling you to create fresh experiences in your daily life and to thrive in your own unique way.
